Audiobook Production 101: How to Turn Your E-Book into an ACX-Ready Audiobook

By the WEB7TOOLS team · October 9, 2026

Turning an e-book into an audiobook is one of the best ways to reach new readers, but ACX has strict technical rules and a review process. This guide takes you step by step from your manuscript to files that are ready for ACX.

Note: the technical figures below match ACX’s published audio requirements at the time of writing. ACX can change its rules, so always check the current requirements on the ACX website before you submit.

Step 1: Confirm you have the audio rights

Publishing an e-book does not automatically mean you hold the audiobook rights. If you self-published, you usually do. If you have a publisher, check your contract. You will need to confirm your rights when you add the title to ACX.

Step 2: Choose how the book will be narrated

You have three main options: narrate it yourself, hire a narrator for a fee, or work with a narrator on a royalty-share arrangement through ACX. Narrating yourself costs the least money but takes the most time and skill. Hiring a narrator gives a more polished result and saves time. Think about your budget, your voice and how much time you can spend.

Step 3: Prepare the manuscript for the ear

A book that reads well on a page does not always sound good out loud. Before recording:

  • Remove or rewrite references like “see the chart below” or “as shown in the table.”
  • Decide how numbers, dates, abbreviations and URLs will be spoken.
  • Make a pronunciation list for names and unusual words.
  • Prepare the opening credits, closing credits and a retail audio sample.
  • Split the book into chapters. Each chapter will be its own audio file.

Step 4: Record in a quiet, consistent space

Record in a small, soft room, such as a closet with clothes or a space with blankets and curtains. Use the same microphone, distance and position every session so your sound stays consistent across chapters. Leave a short stretch of silence (room tone) at the start and end of every recording.

Step 5: Edit the audio

Editing removes mistakes, long pauses, loud breaths and mouth noise, and keeps the pacing natural. This is usually the longest step. A common rule of thumb is that editing takes several hours for every finished hour of audio, depending on the recording quality and the editor.

Step 6: Master to ACX requirements

ACX checks each file against technical standards. The main ones are:

  • Format: MP3, 192 kbps or higher, constant bit rate, 44.1 kHz.
  • Loudness: overall level (RMS) between -23 dB and -18 dB.
  • Peaks: no higher than -3 dB.
  • Noise floor: no higher than -60 dB RMS.
  • Room tone: about 0.5 to 1 second at the start and 1 to 5 seconds at the end of each file.
  • File length: each file under 120 minutes.
  • Structure: one file per chapter, plus opening credits, closing credits and a retail audio sample.

Missing any of these is one of the most common reasons audiobooks are rejected, which is why many authors hand this step to a specialist. Our audiobook production and ACX editing service covers editing, mastering and ACX compliance checks.

Step 7: Prepare your cover and details

ACX requires square cover art, 2400 x 2400 pixels. You will also add the title, author, narrator, description, categories and sample. Check each field carefully, because mistakes can delay review.

Step 8: Upload, review and publish

Upload your files to ACX. They run an automated and a manual quality review. If a file fails, you receive notes explaining what to fix. After approval, your audiobook goes on sale on platforms such as Audible, Amazon and Apple Books, depending on the distribution option you chose.

Step 9: Launch and promote

Reviews and early sales help an audiobook get seen. Plan a launch: announce it to your email list and social channels, share audio clips and ask early listeners for honest reviews. If you want help, see our launch services on the pricing page.

How long does it take?

A realistic plan is several weeks from manuscript to published audiobook. Preparation and recording take the most time, followed by editing and the ACX review. Starting with a clean manuscript and a consistent recording setup saves the most time.

Frequently asked questions

What does ACX-ready mean?

It means your audio files meet ACX’s technical and structural requirements, such as file format, loudness, noise floor, room tone, chapter files and credits, so they can pass ACX’s quality review.

Can I turn my e-book into an audiobook without narrating it?

Yes. You can hire a narrator or work with one through ACX. You still need to prepare the manuscript and make sure the final audio meets ACX requirements.

How much does audiobook production cost?

Costs depend on the length of the book, narration and editing. WEB7TOOLS audiobook production starts at $15 per hour and ACX editing and compliance at $50. See the pricing page for details.
